Am 9. Mai hatte ich die Möglichkeit, einer Arbeitsgruppe der Universitätsbibliothek Konstanz Ergebnisse meines Promotionsprojektes vorzustellen. Diese Arbeitsgruppe befasst sich mit dem aktuell stattfindenden Umbau der Bibliothek. Das war natürlich für mich die Gelegenheit, mit ExpertInnen sowohl über meine Analysen als auch über potentielle Verbesserungen der materiell-räumlich-sozialen Strukturen der UB zu diskutieren. Ein zentraler Schwerpunkt meines Vortrags „Wissensraum und Labyrinth“ war – wie könnte es anders sein – die Orientierung und Navigation in Bibliotheksräumen auf Makro-, Meso- und Mikro-Ebene. Passend dazu hat mich heute ein Link zu den Plänen der neuen Stadtbibliothek in Oslo erreicht. Und wen wunderts: Orientierung und Navigation sind auch hier zentrale Themen. NSA 2011 – Die nordische Soziologie ist empirisch!

Nach 14 Tagen Soziologie in Oslo (und ein bisschen Urlaub im Anschluss) ist es wohl Zeit für ein Fazit. Die Motivation hinter der Teilnahme an der Summer School „Comparative Social Sciences“ und der Nordic Socilogical Association Conference war zweigeteilt. Zum einen wollte ich meine Methodenkompetenz ausbauen und weitere Auswertungsmöglichkeiten meines Datenmaterials diskutieren, zum anderen wollte ich natürlich die Soziologie in Norwegen besser kennenlernen.

Beides ist wohl gelungen. Nach 5 Tagen Case Study Lectures mit Andrew Bennett bin ich mir sicher, dass ich im Herbst noch einmal mit neuem Blick, neuen Methoden und neuen Tools mein Datenmaterial unter die Lupe nehmen werde. Mir ist ganz besonders aufgefallen, dass meine nordischen KollegInnen empirisch ganz anders ausgebildet werden, als es, soweit ich das beurteilen kann, bei uns der Fall ist (und das obwohl ich davon ausgegangen bin, dass die Methodenausbildung in Konstanz ziemlich gut ist). Hier wird einem Research-Design viel mehr Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Das Research-Design wird entwickelt, graphisch aufbereitet, auf Konferenzen zur Diskussion gestellt, in Fachjournals publiziert etc. Die nordischen KollegInnen sind regelrecht darauf getrimmt, Research-Designs zu begutachten und ihre Stichhaltigkeit zu überprüfen. Renaissance of the Library, NSA 2011 – No Poster, but a Presentation!

Sometimes thinks take other ways than expected. In spring I applied for the Nordic Sociological Association (NSA) Conference in Oslo. And my paper concerning the “Renaissance of the Library” was accepted for the poster presentation – I thought. But some weeks ago Prof. Ragnvald Kalleberg contacted me: I should be one of the presenters in his session “Sociology of Science” (this Friday afternoon). I was quite surprised!

Now my preparation for this presentation is finished. I was pleased to write a paper concerning my presentation topic that you can find here.

Another task during the session will be, that I will commentate Ragnvald Kallebergs presentation “Academics communicating with citizens in publics”. I am looking forward to do so, because this is a really interesting topic that is connected with my work in a theoretical and a practical way (some of you may think about “Space-Expedition: Konstanz”).

Det er fantastiskt! Jeg kan delta i konferansen fra Nordic Sociological Association i Oslo og presentere mit poster. Postern har titteln ”Renaissance of the Library: Catalyser for Participation in Cultural Life and Centre of Urbanity”.

Konferansen begynner etter Summer School in Comparative Social Science Studies, derfor kan jeg være to uker i Oslo. Jeg gleder meg veldig til o være i Norge.

April was an amazing month! First I thought it would be a quiet, peaceful month. But then it was a lot of work! Oslo Summer School in Comparative Social Sciences

Jeg gleder meg veldig at jeg kan delta i Summer School in Comparative Social Science Studies 2011. Jeg har fått en bekreftelse, at jeg kan delta i kurs “Case Study Research Methods” i slutten av juli.

Summer School gir meg sjansen til å forbedre sosiologi kunnskapene mine og til å bli bedre kjent med Universitetet i Oslo og byen.

Jeg gleder meg veldig at jeg kan være noen dager i Oslo/Norge, kanskje jeg gjør en ferie tour etter Summer School.

I am very happy to be accepted to the Oslo Summer School in Comparative Social Science Studies 2011. I’ll participate in the course “Case Study Research Methods” at the end of July. The chosen course may give me the chance to review the results of my PhD project „Spaces of Knowledge-Operationalisation of Knowledge in University Libraries” and discuss the lessons learned during the explorative period. I have also planned to take it as an opportunity to reflect on my post-doc project „Renaissance of the Library: Centre of Urbanity and catalyser for Knowledge Cities“.

Some information concerning the above named projects:

The project „Spaces of Knowledge-Operationalisation of Knowledge in University Libraries” is the dissertation project I am currently conducting. It is empirical and thus I designed a comparative case study analysing selected university libraries in Germany, Great Britain and Switzerland. The collected data material (interviews, participant observation, mental maps and photo documentation) illustrates that materiality and technology not only make a crucial contribution to the perception and experience of space, but also have effects on the processes of knowledge production. Material and social exclusion mechanisms configure progresses of (corporate) identity and affect the behaviour towards libraries and their contents.

The project „Renaissance of the Library“ will be my following project. It focuses on public libraries in urban space: New libraries like the planned new Deichman Bibliotek in Oslo may act as centres of the social life in a city and therefore they may be catalysers for Knowledge Cities. Public libraries are no more just a place to loan books, but they may be cultural and social midpoints of a city. They provide a wide range of services like exhibitions, readings, discussions, events, and meeting spaces for heterogenic groups of users.  The research design for this project is also planned as a case study.

My participation on the Oslo Summer School should enable me to improve not only my methodical skills, but also the research design of my forthcoming post-doc project. And of course, I am very happy to be in Oslo again! I am looking forward to spend a great week (and maybe some holidays) in this beautiful city!
